Endless Standing Ovations for Matthias Goerne's Schubert recital with Christoph Eschenbach in Paris on November 8, 2011. Salle Pleyel (1,900 seats) was sold out. Christian Merlin, music critic for France's leading newspaper Le Figaro, reports the audience - emotionally shocked - had left the hall without talking. With Goerne, an absolute master of the art of song, there was no reason for presenters to regard song recitals as a minority taste and box office poison.
(The duo is recording Schubert's three song cycles for the harmonia mundi label, the first installment of which – “Die schöne Müllerin" – was released in May 2009)
